The History Society is one of the largest arts societies at the University of Leeds. Whether you’re an IHP, Joint Honours, or a straight History student, we’re an incredibly active society – socially and academically, to help make your time at the University of Leeds an unforgettable experience. With roughly 6 hours a week teaching time (if you’re lucky!), we organise regular events throughout the year, from pub quizzes and sports events to big nights out to help you settle in, socialise and get involved with the University.
In the last few years HistSoc has gone from strength to strength. We have increased our membership significantly, tripling in 2 years to this past year’s total of just over 470 members. This year we were proud winners of the RateMyPlacement National Society Showcase – winning £5000 for the Society. Out of almost 300 LUU societies, we won Best Departmental Society and runner-up Best Overall Society at this year’s Leeds University Union’s prestigious Riley Awards. This year HistSoc will be offering more social and academic opportunities than ever before!
The History Society Christmas Ball at the beautiful Royal Armouries was the highlight of last year, selling out to more than 250 people in less than an hour. This year’s promises to be even bigger and better. Members also have the chance to join us on a trip abroad. After visits to Amsterdam and Berlin, this Easter we jetted off to Prague – definitely a weekend to remember!
Although HistSoc love to socialise, we know that getting a top degree is a priority. We also provide opportunities to help you get involved in numerous extra-curricular academic events hosted by the School of History. We promote and publicise all events such as guest speakers, skills workshops and student-led debates through our fortnightly newsletter, ‘Primary Sauce’, sent exclusively to HistSoc members – to make sure you get the most out of your time at the University of Leeds. We also keep you updated on employability events hosted by our sponsors. We are currently in search of sponsorship for the 2014-15 year- if you want to contact us go the Committee page for our details!
