The History football team is a great way for History Society students to get involved in competitive, high level intramural football, whilst also providing a great social and friendly atmosphere. It is ideal for those seeking relaxed sporting development, to stay fit during university and to enjoy the benefits of the sports socials.

Including a squad of 20 with a starting 11, which often rotates around availability and in giving everyone the opportunity to play, the HistSoc football team is a fair and fun chance to play football around a degree.

Through the years, the HistSoc football team has proved to be a success on and off the field. This year, boasting a strong goal scoring outfit, we finished a respectable third in our first semester and second semester first division tables. Our most notable success was a 13-1 victory against a very skilled Regents Park, a team who had managed to put 6 past us the term before. Away from the football field, the team bonded quickly through socials, and had the chance to mix with the netball team on joint sports events. A feature of HistSoc sports we hope to continue well into the future.

The annual boys vs girls netball match for example, has been a great hit with both football and netball teams, and has proved highly competitive!

This year we hope to begin open training sessions to boost fitness and to increase the amount of time history students spend getting to know each other; another great way of bonding on the pitch. Plus, the majority of this year’s team is sadly leaving, opening the way for a new batch of players to form the HistSoc team in 2014/15; an exciting prospect, and perfect opportunity for first years to have a crack at breaking into the squad.

In the 2013/14 season the HistSoc football team has proved successful in its performances on the pitch, and in its socials off it, and we hope to continue that success next year!
